It’s history in the making! Come and be a part of it on Saturday, January 20, 2007! This historic game features the Lake of the Woods Bears battling the St. Paul Johnson Governors in a one-of-a-kind high school hockey game played outside on the Baudette Bay, just off the famous Rainy River! The Baudette Bay Hockey Classic is in commemoration of old time northern Minnesota "pond hockey".
Read about "Hockey Day Minnesota" and the official announcement made during the Minnesota Wild game on our The LATEST page.
The concept to host an outdoor hockey game on the Baudette Bay began several years ago because many area hockey legends made their start skating on the Baudette Bay. Young skaters, hoping to play for a team, would begin skating on the Baudette Bay, or on the frozen ravine in Williams, MN, as soon as shore ice would be considered safe. And, in some cases, earlier!
This historic game will show today’s players what hockey used to be all about. Gone will be the comforts of heated, indoor arena’s as the Bears and the Governors take on each other and the unpredictable elements!
Fans will love this exciting experience as they cheer on the players. The natural rise of Willie Walleye Park, located on the banks of the Baudette Bay makes for perfect viewing for thousands of hockey fans. Along with "The Classic", dozens of other family friendly events and activities are planned throughout the weekend.
